HDMI cables have been out for quite some time now since 2003, and there’s lots of electronic devices that’s based on HDMI. There’s also other new cables like the DisplayPort, which is mainly for computer display, though DisplayPort has been upgraded to support audio frequencies too. But now, a group of consumer electronics company has grouped to create yet another new standard A/V cable base on Ethernet, and called it HDBase-T.
HDBase-T is an effort from huge electronics product manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Sony, and even Valens which manufacture semi conductors. The concept is based on Cat5e/6 cables, and by using a slight tweak, they’re able to use Ethernet cables to transmit audio and video signals. The only main advantage would be that it can also transfer small amount of power, 25W to a maximum of 50W, whereas HDMI can’t. Also, Ethernet cables can be rather long and cheap.
But when you start to mass produce products based on such standard, and some consumers actually go and use some cheapo China-made Cat5e cables, things won’t go very well I assume, with lots of noise on screen and signal lost complains from consumers with no knowledge of these things. Then again, the standard will only start lifting on 2011, therefore its too early to guess what’ll we end up using. Perhaps half way down, another standard has been found?
