Well, this is a big surprise. DigiTimes is citing sources from “component players” claiming that the first smartbooks featuring Google’s bigger operating system will launch sometime late the month. Apparently, they will follow the Nexus One strategy, whereby the launch of a self-branded Chrome OS notebook manufactured by Inventec will be made available to developers only, and ODM will follow suit for the mass market – the ARM-based machine will not be sold through normal retail channels and is expectated to ship a very modest 60,000 to 70,000 units. Acer and HP are rumoured to be launching Chrome OS gear as early as December while ASUS waits to gauge market reaction. Now, where’s Dell?

Intel, Samsung, and Toshiba are joining forces for R&D efforts in a consortium financed partly by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The government Ministry is pouring in an expected 50 percent, or 5 billion yen / US $62 million and the rest from the members. The goal is to develop semiconductor chips nearing 10nm by 2016. That’s 6 years’ time. Ten more companies are expected to be invited once things get sorted out. Wow, things will get very interesting once 10nm chips get into our devices.

Here’s the official commercial of the Palm Pre 2, with the fresh new webOS 2.0. if you look at the video embedded below, you’ll see Angry Birds, Facebook and some new 2.0 features being featured in the video. Is HP making a runaway success with this much delayed product? At least the ad does look catchy with that tune. Very ‘HP’ indeed.

This is fast. The iFixit team had their paws on the fairly new Nokia N8, and already, they’re dissecting it. That’s what they’re good at, anyway. The battery of the N8, BL-4D battery cell can be easily replaced by removing the two Torx screws. iFixit mentioned that the N8’s overall construction is the “beefiest” of any phone this year. Thought, the pair of camera modules are not removable from the main board. The N8 sports similar touchscreen controllers in the Kin two and the BlackBerry Torch.
