ARMv8 detailed: 64-bit architecture, AppliedMicro first in line

November 1st, 2011

ARMv8 detailed: 64-bit architecture, AppliedMicro first in lineThought Windows on ARM was snazzy? Have a gander at this. The outfit’s forthcoming ARMv8 architecture, the first ARM architecture to include a 64-bit instruction set, has just been detailed, with a goal to expand the reach of ARM processor-based solutions “into consumer and enterprise applications where extended virtual addressing and 64-bit data processing are required.” The ARMv8 architecture consists of two main execution states — AArch64 and AArch32 — and we’re apt to see the real benefits hit high-end servers first. The ARMv8 architecture specifications are available now to partners under license, with the company planning to disclose processors based on ARMv8 during 2012, with consumer and enterprise prototype systems expected in 2014. Head on past the break for ARM’s take, or meander to the source links for AppliedMicro’s gloating.

AMD releases 11.10 drivers with official 5x1 support

AMD today released the final version of its Catalyst/Vision 11.10 drivers. Gamers who have been playing Battlefield 3 or Rage with Radeon HD graphics cards may be running a preview driver variant of 11.10, but if you have preview 2 or earlier, you’ll want to update to the final version.

Besides being essential for running Battlefield 3 and Rage at their best, the new 11.10 software finally brings in official support for the Eyefinity 5×1 configuration. What’s so great about this? A handful of screens, but no bezel right in the middle. Check out some of the videos after the jump. Read more…

Google TV arriving next week with Honeycomb and Android Market

Google TV arriving next week with Honeycomb and Android Market

It has been a long year for Google TV. The first (and only, so far) round of hardware started shipping in October 2010 and at the time, promised the Android Marketplace with its wealth of third party apps early in the next year. That clearly didn’t happen, and it quickly became most notable for what it was being blocked from doing, like streaming video from TV providers like Hulu and various network TV websites. After various false starts and delays, Sony Google TV and Logitech Revue hardware will finally receive updates to Android 3.1 Honeycomb (congratulations Google, now where’s Ice Cream Sandwich?) starting this weekend with Sony up first and Logitech “shortly thereafter.” The biggest additions are the aforementioned apps, a new interface, and a refocused system for content discovery that starts with the new TV & Movies app pictured above. Check out the gallery for more pictures of the new Google TV, while more details and videos follow after the break. Read more…

Samsung Galaxy Nexus confirmed to have ‘fortified glass,’ not Gorilla Glass

Samsung Galaxy Nexus confirmed to have 'fortified glass,' not Gorilla Glass

For all the talk of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in recent days, there’s still quite a few questions surrounding the flagship Ice Cream Sandwich phone. Last week we learned that the phone’s 4.65-inch screen was a standard Super AMOLED display and not a Super AMOLED Plus variation (as seen on the Galaxy S II), and now Corning has confirmed that the device doesn’t use its trademark Gorilla Glass as you may have assumed given its high-end status. According to Samsung, however, it does use a type of “fortified glass,” but the company isn’t getting any more specific than that. We guess we’ll have to wait for some stress tests (or clumsy hands) to see just how well it holds up.

Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry provides a long-awaited design jolt, compensates for a lot

RIM and Porsche (of all companies) have just taken the official wraps off of the Porsche Design P’9981 BlackBerry, a frighteningly beautiful new slab that offers up a forged stainless steel frame, hand-wrapped leather back cover, sculpted QWERTY keyboard, and “crystal clear touch display.” It’ll ship with an exclusive Porsche Design UI and a bespoke Wikitude World Browser augmented reality app experience, not to mention the “premium, exclusive PINs that help easily identify another P’9981 smartphone user.” Fancy. As for specs, it’s boasting a 1.2GHz processor, HD video recording capabilities, 8GB of onboard memory, Liquid Graphics technology, a microSD expansion slot, an inbuilt NFC module and BlackBerry OS 7. We’re told that it’ll be available from Porsche Design stores later this year, and the price is expected to be somewhere around $2,000. Head past the jump for T-break’s hands-on vid.
