Anonymous releases Twitter hijack tool

Anonymous has reportedly released a tool called the Universal Rapid Gamma Emitter (URGE) that makes it easier for the “hactivist” group to tweet faster without constantly copying and pasting text on Twitter. But underneath that disguise is a tool with ability to hijack trending topics of choice, allowing the attacker to tweet messages within them.

The URGE tool is the group’s answer to Twitter’s lack of trending hash tags that actually serve a cause and mean something to free thinkers of the world. According to the group, trending topics on Twitter are typically redundant and pop culture-like – they’re more appealing to users so that they get people to twee more.

“This was pathetic in our eyes, and we could not stand by and take it anymore,” the group said. “We have developed a program called U.R.G.E. Universal Rapid Gamma Emitter (twitter edition) which hijacks trending topics of our choice and lets us tweet messages within them. This will help raise awareness of problems going on in this world and show people that real problems exist outside of ‘Jersey Shore’ and ‘Sex.’”

Although it will be distributed to all Anonymous members, the Twitter hijacking tool is open to anyone who “cares to use this for awareness and bashing corrupt politicians.” Anonymous emphasizes that URGE is not a hacking tool nor is it an exploit tool. That said, don’t expect to take over someone’s Twitter account and post pictures of puppies dressed in pink dresses.

URGE is currently in beta, and requires Microsoft’s .net Framework 4.0 to function. Users can download the program, access the user’s manual and grab the source code by heading here.

As of this writing, Twitter has not responded to the new hijacking tool.
