Are you ready for an EV? BMW will help you determine

Do you like the idea of filling up your car once every two months, and it still works like normal car? Even better if you don’t have to fill up the petrol at all?

There’s a few EV in the market right now. There’s the gimmicky Tesla Model S and the Tesla Roadster Sport, and the very humble Nissan Leaf. Also there’s the upcoming Ford Focus Electric which seem to be very attractive. But let’s not forget the upcoming BMW i-Cars. Well, which is suitable for you, and how are you going to make up your mind?

BMW has a nice little app for the iPhone and Android, called the ActiveE. It’s a brilliantly simple little app, this. You type in your area code, agree to some terms (including the option for BMW to track your usage) and then every time you set out on a drive, it logs your trip, mileage, time and fictional range to determine if an all-electric vehicle is right for you.

In addition to tracking your driving, the app breaks down your individual trips – including stop-overs and the potential for flex-charging (juicing up on the go) – and based on your routine, calculates if a vehicle with a 100-mile range is something to consider.

The EVolve app from BMW will be a free download from the Apple App Store and Android Market when it hits later this month, and if you’re seriously considering the switch to a gasoline-free existence, it’s worth the minimal effort to keep track of your daily driving routine.

Check out a brief demo of the EVolve app in the video above and get ready for the full details on the ActiveE later this week.
