The new and magical second-generation iPad is not the only thing being announced at the Apple event last night. There’s one new and tiny device, and that’s Digital AV Adapter. It’s a HDMI and USB combo dongle for your new and upcoming iPad, but apparently buying this dongle for $39 isn’t really worth it if it only works on the new iPad. Thankfully, it’s also compatible with some of the newer iOS devices before the iPad 2, including the iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod touch, and even the first-generation iPad. Great news there right?

Both movies and slideshows will be capped at 720p output from these older devices, whereas the iPad 2 goes a little further with screen mirroring of up to 1080p, all thanks to the mighty dual-core A5 processor that the iPad 2 has, though movie output’s also limited to 720p. Since the next iPhone is said to be using the same chip, there’s no guessing that this thing will also work with it. We’ll find out in summer.
