When surfing meets dark night with LED, are you trying to kill yourself?

January 25th, 2011

Surfing has always been a fun but dangerous activities, especially when we look at how many lives are lost getting attacked by sharks. But when you’re surfing at time where visibility is at its least, you’re not an extreme surfer anymore, you’re a madman. And we have Mark for that. Famous surfer Mark Visser got hold of his board, and a couple helicopters along, to Jaws, the huge wave reef on Maui Island, Hawaii. He then tried to kill himself by surfing the 40-foot waves at night.

The lighting technologies were created especially for the project by Solus Corporation using ground breaking NASA submarine lighting to ensure the wave and board were lit in the right places, at the right time and illuminated the wave without hindering the vision of Visser, the Jet Ski drivers and the helicopter pilots.

You might think that the shots of him gliding the graceful 40-foot wave is very CGI, they’re not. They’re as real as it gets. He was wearing a buoyancy vest and a modified surfboard with built-in LED lighting. Probably an integrated GPS chip too, just in case.

The video is part of an upcoming Documentation Series called ‘9 Lives’.
