Google Voice will let your port your own number, soon.

A reader has pinged Engadget about a certain Google Voice feature that lets you port you own phone number into its system. What does that mean? Well, your home’s telephone number can now be stored into Google Voice service in the cloud, and pushed to your many on-hand devices. Apparently Google has taken down this feature as the company claimed that it’s still being tested and may not be available to everyone.
“We’re continually testing new features to enhance the user experience. For a limited amount of time, we’re making the Google Voice number porting process available to users. We don’t have any additional details to share at this time, but plan to offer this feature to all users in the near future.”
The feature is under phone setting and you’ll easily see the “change / port” option (when it’s launched). The cost of porting is $20 and, and it’ll terminate your current service plan and probably prompt the carrier in question to charge applicable early termination fees, but that’s pittance for saving your old line for the indefinite future. Well, sometimes we just can’t let go of the memorable number.
