Google delays Fiber to early 2011

Google delays Fiber to early 2011World domination plans delayed by a few months. Google announced its intention to venture into ISP territory back in February called Fiber, where they’ll deliver broadband to between 50,000 and 500,000 users, which they promised 100 times faster than typical Internet access.

However, their plans have been hit by a number slightly larger than they expected, forcing them to push the project towards next year. Fiber will be coming to one of more than 1,100 applying communities sometime in early 2011.

But thus far, there have been more than 600 communities in United States applied for it, and even some governments. There’s even a city that changed its name to “Google” to better its chances of getting Fiber from Google, but hopefully they don’t get sued instead.

The initial expected number of applications is around 300 communities, but due to the overwhelming response, Google realized that they need more time to pick the winner who will receive the trial service.

Here’s a map of communities that have applied. The small beige dots represent governments that have applied, and the large brown dots represent communities where more than 1,000 residents have applied.

Google Fiber has already been implemented in around 850 homes of staff and faculty at Stanford University. Google says this trial is showing broadband speeds of up to one gigabit per second. This new service will do well with Google’s latest cloud-based Chrome OS.
