Toshiba’s latest 2.5-inch hard drive is made to withstand heat and chill for you, nonstop!

This is best said as not your ordinary consumer hard drive. Toshiba market this “for rugged operating environments” with continuous 24-hours operation whole year long. The new MK1060GSCX from Toshiba is a 100GB 2.5-inch SATA HDD that the company claims can withstand -15 to +70 degrees Celsius as well as operate at expanded altitudes. The sacrifice you make for that, however, is in speed — the 4,200rpm drive has a 12msec seek time and 1.5Gbit/s interface speed. Toshiba will also offer an even smaller 80GB MK8050GACY version with a PATA interface. No word on pricing, but Toshiba expects the new drives to hit sometime in December. Not sure why anyone would actually one to have this since any latest SSD with ‘corporate product’ status will do just about the same, with faster speed given. Well, unless you’re still running on a legacy notebook, and need it to run 24-hours. Not a very wise move though.
