Sharp shows off 35mm thin BDXL recorder at CEATEC

Super thin design in a portable device might be able to make some hu-ha in the news section, but thinness in home entertainment centre might not have the same impact. I personally love sleek designs, and usually slim devices will have some sleek design cues. While I really love the thinness of this new 35mm Sharp BDXL recorder, some might not share the same thought as me. It’s a common (and bad) concept that thin electronic devices for the living room will easily overheat compared to their ‘fatter’ counterpart.
Sharp’s latest and thinnest Blu-ray recorder is just 35mm thick yet capable of writing to BD-R discs or the newer, pricier, 100GB BDXL discs. But such design comes with a compromise, and the compromise here is the internal HDD, which has been ditch to comply with such slim design. Is there no love for 1.8-inch HDD, Sharp? That’s a rather huge compromise as I see it. It’s going to be rather awfully inconvenient to not have a spinner in there to record those dramas, and then burn them up when you’ve made your pick. But the good thing is that there’s no ‘release date’ and ‘release price’, so perhaps they’ll somehow squeeze in some new 1.8-inch spinner in there at the final product, thought the overall cost may just up quite abit.
