India’s $35 Android tablet hitting retails in January

Remember India’s Android tablet that wanted to prove to the world that they’ll be able to market the $35 tablet? Well they’ve might just be able to pull through it. After some financial issues and hardware limitation, the Indian government has announced that it’s awarded the manufacturing contract to HCL Technologies, and the first batch of tablets are slated to be available by January 10th. There, even a specific launch date is given, what else could go wrong? If we look back at history, HCL Technologies used to be makers of the world’s cheapest laptop, way back ages ago.
That initial run will reportedly only include the 7-inch model that we’ve been seeing all along, but what does that mean? Apparently there’s two additional models, a 5-inch and 9-inch version planned for launch at a much later date. We also presume that the tablet is still hanging onto that $35 price tag (for university students, at least), but that key detail is curiously absent from this latest announcement. Well, be optimistic. Perhaps there might be new partners that can pull down the price even further. Who knows?
