Onza got banned at MLG for merely 2 extra buttons.

Onza got banned at MLG for merely 2 extra buttons.

Gaming gears have been introduced to gamers to ease up your controls and focus on your fragging skills, and manufacturers have been trying hard to implement more features like ‘Turbo Button’ and macros and sensitivity-adjustments to further improve the product and for optimum customization. Who knows, your frags might just increase by one or two all thanks to these features.

Razer Onza is among the wonderful creation from the people of Carlsbad for the console. But now, the MLG (Major League Gaming) officials have banned the Razer Onza from their league.

According to Kasey aka “Killa KC” one of MLG’s Senior Game Tester and Tournament Director:

“The big issue with extra buttons is how easy it is to mod the controller without us being able to monitor it. Modders will be able to turn the extra buttons into rapid fire buttons or a macro like RRX. We cannot simply check every player’s Onza controller to make sure they have not modded it. Sure, someone could do that now with a Microsoft controller, but by doing that they are removing a default button on their controller. People pay a lot of money now for modded controllers with extra buttons that will rapid fire or macro. The Onza would make it impossible for us to monitor this on the circuit.”

MLG’s regulations explicitly stated that “players may not use a controller with Turbo capabilities, Button Mapping capabilities,” on the ground that “Controllers with Turbo capabilities allow Players to press a button that results in their Character performing a set of actions that would normally require the Player to press the same button multiple times.” So, basically the MLG just doesn’t want cheats that comes in the form of macros and Turbo buttons.

But! Irate members of the MLG forum are fast to point out that the Onza’s button mapping simply relocates features of the controller—“swapping your X with your left bumper, for instance”—rather than permitting complex macros. Thus far responses are mixed, and heated. MLG spoke to Razer about it, but it doesn’t seem feasible for Razer to purposely release a somewhat ‘MLG-version’ Onza just for such a small issue.

“The Onza controller has been banned by MLG … without even having one in their hands! How funny is that? LMAO”

“The truth is that this kind of stupidity only makes ppl want one even more,” retorts Razer co-founder Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff.

Others suspect MLG is bowing to Razer rival and MLG sponsor Mad Catz, in what would be some extremely shady back room dealings. The truth behind the ban lies in here somewhere—but we should never underestimate a gamer’s attachment to their controller of choice. Well, if someone insists on using their Razer Orca, they can as well skip the MLG and let them rot by themselves. By the way, please don’t call yourself a competitive gaming person until you’ve been into the PC Gaming scene for few months, and see how ‘competitive’ they can be when compared to console. I still see consoles as a laid-back leisure time instead of competitive gaming platform.

I will admit, it was quite a dick move. But it is outstandingly understandable on why they did this. Those 2 extra buttons could ruin the balance of the game due to being able to be modded without sacrificing any default buttons. So none the less, it was a smart move.
