Asus to join the e-Book Reader device gang with a pricey 8-inch e-Reader

In a world where everyone’s starting to pick up digital reading frenzy, Asus will join in the fun for the ‘lulz’ with their new 8-inch e-Book Reader. Asustek Computer will release a new e-book reader with an 8-inch 64-grayscale TFT-LCD screen without backlight in October 2010 (ouch, you’ll need a torchlight when it’s dark). The LCD panel of Asustek’s e-book reader is provided by Chimei Innolux (CMI), which makes it with a special process to improve reflection, but is still no match for e-paper in terms of contrast ratio and reflective performance. The display also supports a fast response time. The Asus 8-inch e-Reader will retail at below $599. Asustek is also facing a difficult fight as it currently has no content support for its e-book reader and the price is much higher than the US$100-200 for current mainstream e-book readers. Sadly that’s the only spec given, so stay tuned for more.
