Google’s gonna bake some Gingerbread on October

A dood by the name of Eldar Murtazin seemed to be knowledgeable of some Russian slangs, and manage to overhear some unique details in a podcast from mother Russia. Apparently they’re talking about the Droids! Google seemed to be interested in Gingerbread recipe after fondling around with Frozen Yogurts. Yes, the next Android 3.0 will be named sweetly Gingerbread.
Now what’s there in Gingerbread? Google promises of a thoroughly revamped new UI, which is kinda overdue since the first attack of the droids. The cues would taste like something similar to the new 3D Gallery app in Éclair. Hopefully the new UI would keep the simplistic concept of ‘a computer in a handheld device’.
Resolution has been ramped up, to a massive 1280×760. I can’t stop thinking that this would be very obvious hint of Google to strongly support the slate tablets mushrooming in the market. With the big resolution, watching HD video on a slate running on Android would be breeze.
However, this Gingerbread man seemed to be a greedy guy. Demanding a hardware base requirement for the installation is the 1st of its droid siblings, hinting of Google’s intention to fragmentize the handheld market’s OS. Not a bad move actually, but how it goes is really yet to be seen. Perhaps the new UI is very resource hungry? The Gingerbread is demanding a minimum of 1GHz processor to power its heart, and 512MB of RAM to chew at, besides a minimum of 3.5inch display to show off. These specs might seem very awe advance for current handheld, but it’s not surprising that when the 4th quarter of 2010 arrives, these would seem norm to us mortals. By then, most high-end handhelds out on the market for Christmas frenzy sales would be able to run Gingerbread, while other lower-end handheld can opt for the Froyo. Who knows, Google might also give Froyo a facelift of 2.3 soon, which seemed very possible for me!
- Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.
- Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5″ and higher. We all of course heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming.
- New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4″ and higher
- Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery App on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.
- Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2
