Taking Shots 20 Miles from Earth's Surface With a Balloon

March 19th, 2009

A team of teenage students spend $77 for Nikon Coolpix and $60 latex balloon filled with helium to capture these shots which are 20 miles away from Earth’s surface. Radio-synced to Google Earth, tracked the package soared 885 feet per minute into the sky, taking shots on a periodic timer. The balloon failed around 100,000 before the system parachuted to the ground. The students were able to recover the package that landed 6 miles away from the site they launched it, they extracted the SD card. More pictures after the break.
