Hitachi Stacked Volumetric Optical Discs (SVOD) technology

October 7th, 2006

Hitachi created storage with its Stacked Volumetric Optical Discs (SVOD) technology. The engineers at Hitachi managed to cram in a century of 92 micrometer thick double-sided DVDs into a cartridge which measures only 6.4cm in order to achieve a 940GB storage as opposed to a double-sided Blu-ray disc which holds only 50GB of data. The DVD cartridge will be available earlier next year for $340.
