Mobile TV Broadcast Compatible Tuner for Car Navigation System

May 6th, 2006

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. have jointly developed the “HS706D-A,” the worlds first car navigation system that features a terrestrial digital broadcast tuner supporting both standard TV and mobile TV broadcasts. Nissan plans to launch this car navigation system as its genuine product and introduce it to the companys 13 vehicle models in July 2006. The price is ¥330,000 which is USD2931.

Sanyo already used a terrestrial digital broadcast tuner only compatible with mobile TV broadcast in its “NV-HD830DT” portable car navigation system released in April 2006. To make a tuner compatible with both standard TV and mobile TV broadcasts, Sanyo reportedly developed proprietary two-branch and decoder LSIs. The two-branch LSI efficiently controls two antennas and tuners and enables high-quality reception under a diversity of radio circumstances while driving.

The car navigation system can automatically switch to standard TV or mobile TV broadcast in accordance with the radio reception. It catches high-quality standard TV broadcast when the reception is good, but switches to mobile TV broadcast when the reception gets weak.
